Test types are the categories staff choose when creating or editing a test (for example, Chemistry or Microbiology). Types also appear on certificates of analysis. Manage your lab's type catalog under Lab → Test Types (/tenant/test-types).
Permission required
You need tenant.update to open and save this page. Without it, the Test Types link is hidden from the Lab section.
Open Lab → Test Types
- Open the account menu (account circle, top right).
- Under your lab name, choose Test Types (nested under the Lab section).
- On wider screens, select your lab name in the account menu and use the Test Types link in the Lab sidebar.
Add a test type
- Enter a name in New type.
- Click Add.
Names must be unique (case-insensitive). Type is optional when creating a test—see Creating a New Test in Lab Axiom.
Import types already used on tests
When your catalog is empty, Lab Axiom may offer Add type from existing tests (or Add types from existing tests (N)) to copy distinct type names already stored on test records into the catalog.
Rename a test type
- On a row, click the rename (pencil) icon.
- Edit the name and click Save, or click Cancel.
If tests still use the old name and your role includes test.update, Lab Axiom asks whether to update those tests when you rename. If you lack test.update, the catalog name changes but existing tests keep the old type until someone with permission updates them.
Delete a test type
- Click the delete (trash) icon on a row.
- Confirm in the dialog.
Lab Axiom blocks deletion when one or more tests still use that type. Remove or reassign the type on those tests first.
